Laura in a Buenos Aires Gym

by Johannes Springenseiss

Yesterday I saw Laura - my second aunt on my mother's side - in the gym, here in the Retiro. Never pegged her as an exercise enthusiast, but she was right there galloping away on the treadmill. Then she walked over to the weight room and began warming up with 40-pound dumbbells. Next came dozens of sit-ups and the formidable cable machine. At that point I remembered Laura had died years earlier, and I might’ve attended the funeral. Aware of my rather checkered track record handling miracles, I picked up my gym bag and made the beeline for the parking lot.
