Not to Be Missed

by Robert McEvily

At the crumbling Rialto Theater, a poster appeared overnight for a midnight screening of Not to Be Missed, a film no one had heard of, but everyone suddenly felt compelled to see. The line stretched around the block, people buzzing with excitement and a strange urgency they couldn’t explain. The ticket-taker, a man with opal eyes and no shadow, said only, “One-way viewing, no refunds.” When the reel began, the screen flickered once, then showed nothing but a dark hallway and the sound of breathing. By dawn, the theater was locked from the inside, and a sign hung on the door: Next showing tonight. Bring a friend.
