Another Moon Over Buffalo

by George Hay

The moon hovered low over Buffalo, casting a pale glow on the empty parking lot behind the community theater. Inside, Charlotte rehearsed her lines with the desperation of a woman who’d waited too long to chase her dream. George, her husband and scene partner, flubbed his cues but nailed the pratfalls, as usual. In the wings, their daughter sighed, holding a phone that buzzed with law school reminders and Broadway rejection emails. The audience was only half-full on opening night, but their laughter was loud and forgiving. When the curtain fell, the applause felt like moonlight—soft, distant, but real enough to make them believe in second acts.
