It wasn't something she ever consciously chose to do. But she couldn't deny she'd come to see the warning signs - usually there was an element of anxiety involved, her heart would race, she couldn't focus; and then, often moments before, she'd feel dizzy, her ears would ring. She'd find herself diverting from the trip home in order to get to a nearby store. She'd make small conversation with the staff most of the time, feeling it helped to do more than just calm her nerves. In the early days, it was a pepper grinder, a block of chocolate, but more recently, it had been a blouse, wine glasses, and even a small, handheld blender. She'd leave the store marveling quietly, blissfully, at how utterly free she felt - all fear, worry, falling away - and at how very serene her world was again.
