The overhead light created ghastly shadows, so I kept arranging lamps in my kitchen to soften my appearance, and I used a surge protector to plug them all in, plus my laptop. There's a Kandinsky print above my stove I wanted to use in the background. (I read online the woman I was interviewing with loved Kandinsky.) Ten minutes to the call, I noticed my neck looked old. Then I noticed my smile looked false, and I had second thoughts about my orange blouse, and I felt tears welling. "Hey, hello," I said when it started, and then she said something I didn't hear, and I said, "this is so wonderful," a word I never use.
