The Sixth Sentence

by Amy Sisson

The first sentence is a feint, a thrust into nothingness, leading the reader on but taking her nowhere. The second sentence settles down somewhat, because it’s time to take the journey seriously. The third sentence hovers and hesitates, having sensed a flash of brilliance that disappeared before it could be impaled, stuck to the page with a colored pushpin. The fourth sentence flutters anxiously, because time is passing and mortality rears its head. The fifth sentence sighs with resignation, perhaps regret, for opportunities lost. The sixth sentence ends, almost before it starts.
