Olivia’s parents believed she was better. Alone in the bathroom, she
traced the ladder of white scars climbing her arm. She brushed her teeth
until her gums tore. She rinsed the pink foam down the drain. She
opened the door. When she kissed her mother, the taste of her own bitter
blood still lingered on her lips.
