Ollie and Ruby

by Oliver Cassidy

Every evening, Ollie the owl watched as Ruby the robin perched on the lowest branch of his great oak tree, humming soft melodies to herself. He longed to say something, but every time he opened his beak, only an awkward hoot escaped, sending Ruby fluttering away in surprise. One night, determined to impress her, he spent hours practicing a gentle whistle, mimicking the sweet notes of her song. When Ruby arrived the next evening, he finally found the courage to try, and to his delight, she paused, tilting her head with curiosity. "That was lovely," she chirped, hopping closer, "but why the sudden serenade?" Blushing beneath his feathers, Ollie simply shrugged and said, "Some melodies are worth learning."
