My first big girl bike was painted pink with a mint green trim. I left it outside during summer thunderstorms, and rust formed where the paint had been scratched and nicked. I told my best friend, who lived down the street, that those rusty dents were from bullets. That, really, I came from a war torn parish south of Paris. We were refugees. She believed me.

Shazelle Goulet received her MFA from California College of the Arts. She's originally from Clearwater, Florida and until the age of 9, thought "mermaid" was a perfectly acceptable profession. She currently lives in San Francisco.
