Tour of My First Apartment

by Alexia Ruggles Brown

Here is my first apartment. This is where my boyfriend and I made a pretend home, but didn’t make love. This is where we ate, here at the couch, and stared at the TV. This is where I stashed the wine bottles. This is where I gave up. This is where I lay empty and weak as he yelled from the hallway that he wanted me gone.

Interesting tour. A lot of pain and emotion packed into this six. Each sentence is a volume within itself and there are things that are hinted at, that is why this piece works on so many levels. I look forward to more of your writing.

I like this - the sparse yet vivid style is distinctive (its angst-filled and emotionally charged). Looking forward to reading more also.

I like the tone of this piece--the detached tour guide voice calmly explaining the painful sequence/location of events. There is definitely a lot happening under the surface in this piece—the pretend home, not making love, the wine bottles are all details that hint at more. The line, “This is where I gave up,” is the simplest yet most powerful line, in my view.

I like the casual tone of someone with issues creeping out of the seams.
