After Cuba

by Ben Tanzer

We went to Cuba because my wife thought it would save our marriage, somehow rekindling whatever it was that had died for me. She said it would be exotic, and illicit, but the food was bad and the hotels were dirty. When we got home my wife said, “So, what’s next sport-o, counseling?” and I said, “I don’t know, are we trying to save this thing or wind it down peacefully?” “What do you want?” she said. “I want to call it quits,” I said. And that was that.

What a shame. Perhaps she should meet a Cuban.

Great 6 :)

I agree, a great six. Well-written and to the point.

Ben, if I wrote a story with a similar theme to this, my wife would think we were in immediate need of A Serious Discussion. Did you screen this one with your wife first?

well done.

Thank you all for the nice comments, and to Pete's question, while I screened it with my wife, I may have failed to so with our friends who are having marital problems.

This was cynical fun and the dialog is extra zing-y..

As expected, this changed my life. I almost typed wife. Luckily I don't have one of those nor have I been to Cuba.

Great stuff, Ben.

Ben,

Love your narrative voice.
This feels like the beginning of a longer story -
I hope there is more.

Thanks so much, I will get back to work.

That was good. So understated, yet so much said. Not the crispest read I've read, but crisp enough to hammer home the emotion.

Thanks,

Albeit somewhat depressing subject matter, the intense tone of alienation you've managed to communicate in such a succinct way is compelling. I think this could be a paragraph in a Raymond Carver story. Great stuff. Thanks for sharing.

Cuba??? Next time, with her new husband, she should try Hawaii.
