Life Begins

by Stephanie Elias

I am almost 29 years old but I only came to life about eight months ago. They cut me open, and out spilled my change of direction. I felt this enormous wave of responsibility, but the warmth of love and happiness washed this away. I gazed for the first time with renewed vision. I shut my eyes as salt water pools welled up in the corners and I contemplated a stark new realisation. As I held those tiny fingers, they clamped around my thumb, a mother’s thumb.
